NotesIn9: New XPages Jumpstart and CheatSheet Update

Today I’m very excited to release my latest “NotesIn9” Show. This is an Extended Edition that comes in at 51 minutes. It’s called:

XPages: Beyond the Introduction

Some time ago, I did another show called: Introduction to XPages. That 73 Minute show was always meant to be “Part 1”, and “Beyond” was meant to be “Part 2”. Taken together I consider this a free XPages Jumpstart coming in right around 2 hours. I’m particularly proud of the “Beyond” show as there are TONS of demos from pretty basic to a little more advanced.

But rather then just show a video of demos, I wanted to come up with something that might be a little more helpful. I really like the Demo app of the XPages Extension Library, so I decided to come up with my own. No Extension Library needed.

So today I’m announcing the grand opening of:
XPagesCheatSheet.com

The first purpose of this site, is to be the home site for the XPages Cheatsheet(s). In addition to holding the PDF’s, this site also contains many of the Demo’s used in the “Beyond” show. I’m making the template, cheatsheet.nsf, downloadable along with the FakeNames.nsf data database that I use. Feel free to pick it apart. It’s my intention to try and continue adding to this database with additional tips and demos as I create more NotesIn9 shows.

I hope the video and demo app area good resource to the XPages community.

Domino Designer on Mac – It’s Social Business!

I just wanted to jump in on the blog posts today about Domino Designer for the Mac.

You can see other’s here:
A Passionate Plea for DDE on Mac at Lotusphere2011
DDE on Mac

This really needs to be made a priority by IBM. Sure, in the grand scheme of things Apple’s market share is still lower the Windows. But Apple has tremendous GROWTH, and GROWTH is what Notes/Domino needs! How many speakers at Lotusphere are using Mac’s? A LOT of them. But they’re crazy enough to use virtual machines. How many students use Mac’s? A LOT of them. But they’re NOT crazy enough to use Virtual machines.

Please IBM – this has to get done. This is like Social Business really. Take Designer to where the people are going!

If it’s easier – don’t do the “full” designer. Do a light version that just has what’s needed for XPages. That’s would be a great product right there!

The Notes/Domino community is a great one. We can evangelize. We can even educate by creating Wiki articles, podcasts/screencasts, and even answer questions in forums and twitter.

But the community can not bring Domino Designer to the Mac. Only IBM can do this. Please IBM – make this a priority. Bring Designer to the Mac so all these Mac people who want the best hardware, can now have the chance to create web applications with the best Web application server out there – XPages via Domino.

NotesIn9: 24 – Fancy Type Ahead in XPages

In this show I try and do something rather dangerous. I attempt to explain a Tim Tripcony blog post on creating Fancy TypeAheads which are TypeAheads that show additional data in the lookup results. This helps aid the user to select the correct record.

I had some technical problems in the show. The sound changed for the demo portion somehow. Also I messed up due to the last Extended Edition and missed episode 23. So the next one will be 23. 🙂

So anyway – here you go. I hope you like it.

NotesIn9 Live: Tuesday Feb 15th at IDoSphere

I’ll be bring NotesIn9 Live to Chris Miller’s IDoSphere next week on Tuesday Feb 15th at 8:30 AM EST.

My session is XPages: Beyond the Introduction. It’s kinda meant to be the second part of an XPages Jumpstart where the first part can be found in my Introduction to XPages Video.

I did this session at the summer Lugs where I get a really good response and even ATTEMPTED to use some it at my 5 minute speedgeeking event. Ya know… It’s a little heard to take 60ish minutes of material and boil it down to 5 minutes. But stupid me.. I tried! 🙂

Anyway, I’ll be talking about using XPages to do some common things. We’ll bind to foreign databases, take an indepth look at repeat control tricks, and maybe even take a peak at some custom object in SSJS. In the original version I talked about BluePrint CSS but I might replace that for another neat repeat control example. You’ll have to tune in to see!

IDoSphere is a 2 day virtual conference. With presentations that were NOT used at Lotusphere. There is a SMALL registration fee but the coupon code IDS2011DL will get you 10% off. My session will make it to NotesIn9, but IDoSphere has many more sessions with much better speakers then me. So if you missed Lotusphere, or even if you went, I suggest that this is worth checking out.

Lotusphere thoughts and some announcements.

I had a great Lotusphere. Though I wouldn’t have known it from the beginning as I was sick, and I mean REALLY sick on the Saturday I traveled, but luckily by Sunday I started feeling human and got ready for the week.

And what a week it was. I presented BP210: XPages: Enter the Dojo with Paul Withers. We’ve not yet gotten an email regarding evals (which is killing me by the way), but I THINK it went pretty good. I did an introduction to using pure Dojo with XPages and then Paul kicked it into high gear with some more advanced techniques. We had some fun with our Karate theme. I put together a humorous Intro Video and Paul found some headbands that we wore. Good Times! 🙂

Tuesday night was SpeedGeeking. That was more difficult then I remembered. I talked about XPages and why you should care about it. Many demos dealing with Repeat Controls, Binding, and Rendering. It was fun but man that does take a lot out of you.

I think the biggest surprise for me was the response that I got from the XPages Cheat Sheet that I compiled. I did not expect such a great response at all. Joyce Davis was going to print 1,000 and ended up printing 1,500. And honestly I thought she was nuts. 🙂 But my understanding is they were almost all gone by the end of the show. Tim Clark and Matt White had them in their PACKED Show and Tell Session. At the end of the session I was talking to someone sitting next to me and just barely noticed that an awful lot of people were going to the front to see the speakers. I remember thinking that was odd to have so many questions after a Tim and Matt session. But it turns out there was a bit of a “rush” to the front to get a hold of the Cheat Sheets!!! Wow!

Tim then had this funny quote that Joyce tweeted later.

I’m very happy that people seemed to like it and I hope it helps in XPage Development!!

The next really cool thing was at the closing general session. I had sent my Introduction to XPages video into VideoFest and it won for the best Video in the App Dev category. Wow! It was even on the big screen and everything!

So while Watson may have won on Jeopardy, I feel like I won at Lotusphere.

So what’s next?

1. I’m desperate to get back to NotesIn9 shows. I’ve got a couple of hopefully really good ones queued up and just need to finish them. So stay tuned for that.
2. Next week I’ll be presenting on XPages for IDoSphere. I’ll blog more about that tomorrow.
3. I’m going to start working on something for openNTF. I hope to have a project there soon. This is in addition to the demo app from our session that Paul and I plan to put on openNTF.
4. Paul and I are planning to do our entire session as a NotesIn9 Extended Edition. It’ll actually be more like a Directors cut as I’ll add a demo in the end on the Extension Library.

So thanks to everyone for a great Lotusphere, and thanks for the interest in the stuff I create. I really appreciate it!

NotesIn9: Extended Edition 05: XPages CMS App Walkthrough

I’m really happy about this show because I have another great guest speaker.  Chris Connor has come one to take a look at a production application and then go into designer and talk about how some of the pieces work.

This is an Extended Edition so it’s a little longer and more detailed then the normal shows.  Chris opens up designer to show how some of the features on his website was built.  Lots of good nuggets of information in there.

Finding me at Lotusphere

I’ve seen a couple of these kinds or posts so I figured I’d give it at go.

I doubt anyone will be looking for me, but if anyone does I should be easily findable.  I’ll be sitting up front at most of the XPages sessions.  🙂

That’s about it really I think.  I’ll be at SpeedGeeking tuesday night and blogger open on Thursday.  I present a XPages: Enter the Dojo on Tuesday afternoon and I’ll probably stop by the VideoFest lounge more then once, and thanks to my wife, I’ll even have my own shirts.

So if you see me, please say hi.  🙂

NotesIn9: 22- Reviewing TLCC XPages Courses

In this show I do a review of TLCC’s distance learning products. I talk about what they offer and then do a demo of what their courseware by looking at their XPages lessons.

Disclaimer:
I was not paid for this review. Over the years I’ve purchased with my own personal money several TLCC courses, including the first XPages course. However, I was given a free review copy of the second XPages course and I do talk about that course during the show.

XPages Cheat Sheet: Here it is!

Here is the XPages Cheat Sheet that I’ve promised to the community.

I’m releasing this a little earlier then Jan 29th, which I had originally planned,  just in case someone spots an error then I MIGHT be able to fix it before it goes to the Lotusphere printers.

The cheatsheet references the domain xpagescheatsheet.com, which is not currently live.  I originally thought about hosting the files there and using that to assist in translating it to additional languages, but now I’m not sure.  I’m investigating the possibility of hosting this on openNTF.org, so I’ll let everyone know what happens.

Again, I need to thank the community for this. By compiling information from MANY different sites, and discussing and getting advice from several of my friends this was truly a group effort.

Ok – Here they are.  I have 2 versions, one for printing on 8.5 x 11 and another for printing on 11×17 as I originally intended.

XPagesCheatSheet-85×11-v1

XPagesCheatSheet-11×17-v1

Please share this with anyone who’s interested in XPages, and check back here at NotesIn9.com for any update notices.

Thanks!

XPages CheatSheet Update

Just wanted to give everybody an update on the XPages Cheatsheet that I blogged about a bit ago.

Last night I sent an almost final version to IBM for some test printing.  Joyce Davis was kind enough to take some pictures for me so I wanted to share.  I have a couple of more tweaks to make and then this initial version will be finished and ready for Lotusphere.

She’ll be printing a BUNCH I’m told, but we have no idea what the interest will be so hopefully there will be enough.

For those that aren’t coming to Lotusphere, PDF’s will be made available.  I’ll also be making available a PDF designed for 8.5 x 11 printing as I know I don’t have an 11×17 printer at home. 🙂

After Lotusphere I’ll start to think about the language translations that people are starting to volunteer for.

Anyway – here’s a sneak peak of that version.  I still have some more adjustments to make.
